Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE) Master Trainers Workshop Held for Nurse Educators in Uttar Pradesh Under Mission Niramaya.
Background :
In Uttar Pradesh, where nursing education is rapidly expanding, it is essential to equip faculty with contemporary assessment methods. According to the INC, B.Sc. Nursing curriculum, the use of OSCE is mandatory for both formative and summative evaluations. A few faculties in the state have been trained on OSCE at different training centres, many of them have not been able to take forward the OSCE processes in their institute. Adoption of standardized OSCE tool for assessment of clinical skills remains inconsistent and limited to few nursing institutions. Tamil Nadu nurses and midwives’ council (TNNMC) has conducted OSCE training for their faculty and has a rich experience and resource for OSCE trainings.
In the rating tool used for rating the institutes, 30% of the evaluation criteria based on learning outcomes was measured through OSCE. A needs assessment survey conducted for the CNPD also revealed a high demand for OSCE training among nursing faculty.
It was realized that OSCE institutionalization is important to meet the regulatory requirements of INC and to elevate the quality of nursing education and produce clinically competent graduates who are market ready. To this end, it was planned to have a series of workshop aimed to equip nursing educators with skills to design, implement, and evaluate OSCEs, ensuring students develop strong practical and clinical decision-making skills.
Aim :
- To enhance faculty capacity to implement OSCE effectively and ensure consistent use of the official OSCE procedure checklist across B.Sc. and M.Sc. Nursing institutions through cascade trainings for developing master trainers and facilitators across Uttar Pradesh
- To improve the validity and reliability of formative and summative practical examinations
Methodology :
Close coordination with TNNMC resulted in inviting a total of five trainers from Tamil Nadu. Participants were trained directly by TNNMC trainers.
The selection criteria for participants included senior faculty of A and B rated nursing institutes across all the division of UP. Only one faculty from each institution was invited and also it was made sure that faculty who have been trained earlier are not included so that we have a wide pool of trained faculty from across the state. It was ensured that participants were willing to travel within their division or district to train other nursing faculty. OSCE workshop was conducted on 14th and 15th May, 2024 at SGPGI College of Nursing, Lucknow A group of 37 master trainers representing all divisions of Uttar Pradesh were trained by UP State Nursing Council in collaboration with TNNMC. UP State Nursing Council and Jhpiego provided financial support these training activities. A cascade OSCE workshop was also conducted in February, 2025 at Gorakhpur, attended by 43 faculty members.
Way forward :
With the help of our master trainers, OSCE workshop will be followed in all divisions of Uttar Pradesh until each college has at least 2 trainers in OSCE per nursing institution. UP State Nursing Council plans to implement OSCE as the assessment method for both formative and summative practical exams in the GNM and ANM courses.
